Based on E.T.A. Hoffmann's tale Das Fräulein von Scuderi created Paul Hindemith and his librettist, Ferdinand Lion, the three-act opera Cardillac. In the person of the title character, a goldsmith, who can separate as a man possessed of his jewelry pieces and not murder, to protect them in the opera are also the tensions between artist and work, discussed between external social and internal, solitary personality.
The Paris population is threatened by a mysterious series of murders. The king leaves the leader of the Prévôté announce that a special court, the "burning chamber" was used to find the perpetrators. A lady discovers how reverently the goldsmith Cardillac is welcomed by all. The gentleman explained to her the reason: Cardillac is the best goldsmith, but each is killed, which buys his jewelry. The lady asks the gentleman, "the most beautiful thing ever created Cardillac" as a gift of love. As this splendid with a belt, which was coined by the goldsmith, the night of love appears, he too is murdered. The daughter Cardillac who loves the officer is torn: on the one hand, it wants to escape with her lover, on the other hand, it is unable to leave her father. But Cardillac holds his daughter does not return - he is interested only created jewelry. When the officer bought a chain, Cardillac knows that he must kill him now. But the attack failed, the gold dealer who suspects the link between the murders and Cardillac, sounds the alarm. Although the officer Cardillac covers the Goldsmith admits his last murder. He is killed by the people, but even in death is his last thought just the jewelry.
