Renovation: Bodydouble for Johann Strauss statue in StadtparkThe unveiling official ceremony of the monument will take place on the 29.09.2011!!! The statue of Johann Strauss in Vienna's Stadtpark will be closed for renovation until September, but two tongue-in-cheek installations have been provided to console disappointed tourists.  The golden statue of "Schani", as Johann Strauss was nicknamed by the Viennese, is known as a highly popular photo motif for guests in Vienna. These days, however, tourists coming to see the statue of Johann Strauss in Vienna's Stadtpark are in for a surprise: the original golden statue is being renovated this summer. After 90 years, the golden statue of Johann Strauss is clearly in need of renovation. In Vienna, guests come firstKlaus Pobitzer, a student of Gunter Damisch and Michelangelo Pistoletto, had the idea of placing the replica statue on a winner's podium, similar to an awards ceremony in sports. In this case, however, the King of Waltz only comes second, leaving the place at the top of the podium to the guests in a gesture of genuine Viennese hospitality. This allows tourists to get a closer look at the composer's statue than ever; unlike the original, the replica may even be touched. A notice on the winner's podium provides further information in eight languages. The installation has been set up in Stadtpark, at two minutes' walk from the original Johann Strauss statue, in the direction of the Kursalon building. The King of Waltz left a note of absenceThe second artist, Zenita Komad, studied art at the Vienna University of Applied Arts and the Vienna Academy of Fine Arts. Her installation is mounted on the building fence enclosing the original statue during its renovation. Komad composed a charming "notice of absence" for the King of Waltz, typed on a sheet of paper emerging from an old-fashioned typewriter: "Dearest! I need a holiday. Don't worry. I'll be back soon, I promise!", the notice says. It is fixed to the fence in eight languages, alternating with an equally multilingual notice by the Vienna Tourist Board, which points the way to the "photo point" with the replica nearby. Both installations are meant to make guests smile rather than frown at the absence of the genuine statue. |
