With its dazzling mix of ballet, polonaise and waltz, the Opera Ball is redolent of the grandeur of the Hapsburg Empire. It has become one of the biggest, most romantic middle-European society events of the year, attended by an eclectic array of aristocrats, bourgeoisie and bohemians.
Admission ticket price is €230 (book early). Boxes, tables and spectator tickets must be bought in addition to admission tickets. Admission is from 9pm; the opening ceremony begins at 10pm with the entrance of the City's debutantes and their partners. The best vantage spot is from a box as table views are limited (a table for two is approximately €180-€360). Spectator tickets are available from €85 per person for the gallery or €25 for a standing ticket.
Dancing opens with a formal polonaise, a showcase for Austrian high society, and socialising continues until 5am. Expect the romantic waltzes of Johann Strauss, Joseph Lanner and Carl Michael Ziehrer, as well as some swing and foxtrot. If formal dancing is beyond you, the Opera Ball Disco in the basement may be a better option.

The Opera Ball, held at Vienna's magnificent State Opera House, is deemed the epitome of ball culture and a top-calibre social event, attracting celebrities from around the globe. This mega event is fully given over to waltzing bliss at a venue where usually opera stars make their big-time stage appearances. The 186 couples dancing the opening polonaise - ladies dressed in white and men in black - experience their "introduction to Viennese society". For others, it is an unforgettable evening at this imposing edifice on Vienna's Ringstrasse Boulevard.
The Opera Star of this year ball will be the Romanian Soprano Anghela Gheorghiu!

56th Vienna Opera Ball
Former James Bond star Roger Moore, 84, and Danish actress Brigitte Nielsen were Austrian entrepreneur Richard Lugner's special guests at this year's Opera Ball.
The 79-year-old Lugner makes headlines in Austria every year by inviting celebrities to the ball, the highlight of Vienna's social calendar with tickets starting at 250 euros ($327) and boxes going for as much as 18,500 euros.
His previous guests have included actresses Andie MacDowell and Faye Dunaway, although in recent years, Lugner has favoured starlets and scandal-sheet regulars like party-girl Paris Hilton.
Last year Karima El Mahroug, the teenage Moroccan woman known as "Ruby the Heart-Stealer" who was at the centre of a sex scandal involving former Italian prime minister Silvio Berlusconi, was on his arm.
Among others Croatian Prime Minister, Zoran Milanovic has attended the ball,
Nielsen, 48, the former wife of action star Sylvester Stallone, appeared in films like "Rocky IV" and "Beverly Hills Cop II" in the 1980s and most recently in the German production of the reality show "I'm a Celebrity Get Me Out Of Here".
Top model Helena Christensen and David Gareth, also attended the ball.
Sports stars were also drawn to the ball, with former German tennis great Boris Becker and ex-footballing compatriot Lothar Matthaus making their first visits.
"It's a big first for me. A good friend invited me and I couldn't refuse," explained Becker, a Grand Slam winner between 1985 and 1996.
The political world was also in evidence, with much of the Austrian government enjoying a a break from the woes of the eurozone.
President Heinz Fischer invited UN chief Ban Ki-moon after a day of intense talks about the crisis in Syria.
The structure of the opera house was planned by the Viennese architect August Sicard von Sicardsburg, while the inside was designed by interior decorator Eduard van der Nüll. It was also impacted by other major artists such as Moritz von Schwind, who painted the frescoes in the foyer, and the famous "Zauberflöten" (“Magic Flute”) series of frescoes on the veranda. Neither of the architects survived to see the opening of ‘their’ opera house: the sensitive van der Nüll committed suicide, and his friend Sicardsburg died of a stroke soon afterwards.
On May 25, 1869, the opera house solemnly opened with Mozart's DON JUAN in the presence of Emperor Franz Joseph and Empress Elisabeth.
The popularity of the building grew under the artistic influence of the first directors: Franz von Dingelstedt, Johann Herbeck, Franz Jauner, and Wilhelm Jahn. The Vienna opera experienced its first high point under the direction of Gustav Mahler. He completely transformed the outdated performance system, increased the precision and timing of the performances, and also utilized the experience of other noteworthy artists, such as Alfred Roller, for the formation of new stage aesthetics.
The years 1938 to 1945 were a dark chapter in the history of the opera house. Under the Nazis, many members of the house were driven out, pursued, and killed, and many works were not allowed to be played.
On March 12, 1945, the opera house was devastated during a bombing, but on May 1, 1945, the “State Opera in the Volksoper” opened with a performance of Mozart's THE MARRIAGE OF FIGARO. On October 6, 1945, the hastily restored “Theaters an der Wien” reopened with Beethoven's FIDELIO. For the next ten years the Vienna State Opera operated in two venues while the true headquarters was being rebuilt at a great expense
The Secretary of State for Public Works, Julius Raab, announced on May 24, 1945, that reconstruction of the Vienna State Opera would begin immediately. Only the main facade, the grand staircase, and the Schwind Foyer had been spared from the bombs. On November 5, 1955, the Vienna State Opera reopened with a new auditorium and modernized technology. Under the direction of Karl Böhm, Beethoven’s FIDELIO was brilliantly performed, and the opening ceremonies were broadcast by Austrian television. The whole world understood that life was beginning again for this country that had just regained its independence. .
Today, the Vienna State Opera is considered one of the most important opera houses in the world; in particular, it is the house with the largest repertoire. It has been under the direction of Dominique Meyer, along with musical director Franz Welser-Möst, since September 1, 2010.
