Lauren Spencer Smith was born in Portsmouth, England in 2003, but grew up in Port Alberni on Vancouver Island in Canada. Passionate about music from an early age, she says she was unable to attend concerts or join a musical theater due to the isolation. Instead, she produced YouTube cover videos and competed in American Idol, where she landed in the top 20. Despite her elimination from the show, she continued to work hard on her music and, as an independent artist, managed to go viral several times after the release of her debut EP, "Mixed Emotions."
