Plot:

Act 1
The impoverished Bohemians Rodolfo, the poet, Marcello, the painter, Schaunard, the musician, and Colline, the philosopher, celebrate Christmas in their shared attic in Paris. Schaunard, who has earned some money, treats them to a sumptuous feast and firewood to warm their freezing room. When they plan to continue celebrating at the popular Café Momus, the poet Rodolfo decides to stay behind for a while to finish his work.

Suddenly, there is a knock at the door. Mimì, a neighbor, asks for a light for her extinguished candle, but a coughing fit leaves her weak. As she is about to leave, she realizes that she has lost her key. Once again, the candle goes out in the draft. Rodolfo finds the key first and mischievously hides it in his hand. As they search the floor by touch, their hands meet, and they instantly fall in love.

The friends call up to Rodolfo from below, unaware that his heart has already been completely captured by Mimì. The two leave the attic together as a couple and follow their friends.

Act 2
On the way to Café Momus, Rodolfo uses his last money to buy Mimì a pink bonnet. He introduces her to his friends, and a conversation about love develops, much to the annoyance of Marcello, who has been disappointed in love.

Suddenly, Musetta, his former lover, appears. As soon as she sees Marcello, she does everything she can to regain his attention. The former couple reunites, and everyone leaves the café together, leaving the bill unpaid.

Act 3
Some time later, in the early hours of the morning, Mimì desperately searches for Marcello in a small, snow-covered place. Rodolfo has left her after a fit of jealousy. When he suddenly appears, she hides nearby and listens. She is devastated to discover the true reason for his behavior. Out of fear and helplessness, he could no longer bear to see her suffering. Mimì is suffering from tuberculosis. Their life together in his freezing attic has further worsened her health.

When Mimì can no longer suppress her coughing, Rodolfo discovers her, and they fall into each other’s arms. Eventually, however, they say a consoling farewell and go their separate ways. Meanwhile, Musetta and Marcello become embroiled in a fierce argument until they, too, angrily part ways.

Act 4
By now, spring has arrived. Rodolfo and Marcello are working in their attic, but nothing seems to go well. Each is thinking of his lost lover. When Colline and Schaunard try to cheer their friends up, they briefly forget their heartache and indulge in a boisterous game.

Suddenly, Musetta rushes in and asks Rodolfo for help. The terminally ill Mimì wants to see her Rodolfo one more time. The friends lay her down on their worn-out sofa. Musetta, whose generous heart can barely bear Mimì’s suffering, fulfills her final wish. She leaves and buys a muff to warm Mimì’s freezing hands. Colline decides to pawn his only possession, his coat, to raise money for a doctor. Marcello has received Musetta’s earrings from her to pawn for the doctor as well.

Left alone, Mimì and Rodolfo remember their great love. When the friends return, Mimì is delighted by the wonderful muff. Musetta tells her that it is from Rodolfo. Happily, Mimì falls asleep with it.

While they are preparing the medicine, Schaunard realizes that Mimì has died. Overcome with grief, Rodolfo collapses over his beloved.
